Six guided hikes will explore nature on Stark Mountain

May 15, 2025 | By Waterbury Roundabout

The Stark Mountain Foundation had announced a series of six free, monthly, family-friendly naturalist-led hikes on Stark Mountain starting May 31.

Vermont Master Naturalist Gene O. Desideraggio will be the guide for these opportunities to explore the mountain’s diverse ecosystems throughout the changing seasons.

The hikes are scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. on the last Saturday of the month, May-October: May 31, June 28, July 26, Aug. 30, Sept. 27, and Oct. 25.

Stark Mountain is home to Mad River Glen ski area. The hiking groups will meet at the flagpole in front of the Mad River Glen lodge. After the hike, participants are invited to unwind at Stark’s Pub at the lodge, where restrooms will also be available.

Each hike will explore the timely flora and fauna on the mountain from spring wildflowers to fall foliage. Desideraggio will help hikers discover signs of wildlife, listen for bird calls, spot animal tracks, or even find a well-worn bear tree.

The hikes are free and open to ages 5 and older (children must have a supervising adult). Capacity is limited, so registration is required. More details and the registration form are online here

The Stark Mountain Foundation is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Stark Mountain. More information: starkmountain.org; email questions to contact@starkmountain.org.
