A stabbing assault in Waterbury on Monday resulted in one Massachusetts woman being seriously injured and another being jailed without bail awaiting a court appearance today to face charges including attempted second-degree murder, according to Vermont State Police.

The incident took place on Monday just before 11:30 a.m. when police responded to the Best Western Plus hotel on Blush Hill Road, Trooper Mae Murdock reported in a press release Monday night.

The investigation led police to arrest 31-year-old Courtney Muchugu, of Worcester, Massachusetts, who troopers say during an altercation stabbed a 23-year-old woman from Springfield, Massachusetts, at the hotel.

Muchugu was lodged at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington without bail. Muchugu is scheduled to be arraigned today at 12:30 p.m. in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Barre on charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Police said the victim sustained “serious, non-life-threatening injuries” in the attack. Troopers also said there is no threat to the community as a result of this incident.

The police report did not say specifically where at the motel the incident occurred or what led to the assault. Additional details will be made public at and after today’s arraignment, police said.
