Road Work: June 23-27
June 21, 2025 | By Lisa Scagliotti
June 23: The I-89 southbound section of this post was updated with news that work scheduled for the passing lane portion of that project will not begin this week as scheduled, due to equipment issues.
Weekly Road Work reports are assembled with information from the Vermont Agency of Transportation on projects in the region, the Waterbury Public Works Department, and other local highway departments for projects in Waterbury and neighboring communities as necessary.
Motorists are reminded to drive with caution through work zones and to follow posted speed limits. Speeding fines are doubled in work areas.

Stowe Street bridge project
The Stowe Street bridge over the Thatcher Brook near the intersection with Vermont Route 100 and Blush Hill Road was closed to all traffic on June 19 for 60 days for the construction of a new bridge.
This week’s work will involve demolition of the existing bridge. Project officials said crews also will be excavating areas for the new precast bridge footings. Following demolition, cofferdams will be built to keep the Thatcher Brook out of the work area.
This Agency of Transportation photo shows the tarp hung under the bridge to collect saw-cutting slurry from demolition work, preventing it from entering the Thatcher Brook. The slurry will be pumped out and disposed of from the tarp.
During this construction period, motorists may get to Stowe Street from Main Street, Union Street, Railroad Street and Lincoln Street.
The Lincoln Street Park and Ride lot is closed with a temporary lot available downtown at the State Office Complex along Park Row at the end of Randall Street. Commuter buses also are using that lot with the Rural Community Transit buses also stopping at Shaw’s on Rt. 100.
The town is providing shuttle service around the bridge closure for local residents who rely on it for pedestrian access to Vermont Route 100. Contact Town Manager Tom Leitz to arrange for that transportation (802-244-4300 or tleitz@waterburyvt.com).
An additional closure of Lincoln Street is expected during the bridge construction for up to 21 days, but that is not expected until late July or early August, according to a state project spokesperson. More details on that will be announced when it is closer to taking place. Read more about this project in the Roundabout News section here.
Kneeland Flats Road
According to Waterbury Public Works Director Bill Woodruff, the final phase of paving on Kneeland Flats Road is expected to be completed “in the first couple of weeks in July.” The road was milled and a first layer of asphalt has been laid. Woodruff said the goal is for the paving to be completed before the Lincoln Street road closure associated with the Stowe Street bridge project happens, because that will shift traffic to Perry Hill and Kneeland Flats roads as a detour.
Woodruff said he does not yet have a specific date for the paving activity, as it is weather-dependent and to be scheduled by the paving contractor. (Future Road Work updates here will include that announcement when the work is imminent.)
Perry Hill Road & elsewhere
Town Highway Department personnel will be working on ditch maintenance on Perry Hill Road and Upland Mowing this week. Other activities on various roads will include roadside mowing, grading, and application of chloride to reduce dust. Motorists are reminded to drive with caution and give crews room.
Main Street
A town crew will be sweeping Main Street ahead of Saturday’s Not Quite Independence Day parade, Woodruff said. In addition, the sidewalk section near the construction site at 51 S. Main St. is also expected to be repaired and reopened before the weekend events.
DUXBURY
Duxbury Selectboard Chair Patrick Zachary shared that Main Street in Duxbury is slated to be paved this summer, most likely in mid- to late July. More details will be announced closer to the time the work will be done, he said.

The Town of Fayston announced that there will be major repairs taking place this week on Tucker Hill Road beginning mid-morning on Monday, June 23. “The Fayston Road Crew will be replacing seven culverts, with efforts focused on minimizing disruptions to morning and afternoon commuter traffic. Our crew will work diligently to keep at least one lane open whenever possible. However, brief full closures will be necessary during certain phases of the culvert replacements,” the town announcement said.
The road crew aims to minimize disruptions during morning and afternoon busy travel times and it expects to complete the work by Thursday. Should it take longer, an additional announcement will be made, they said.
Also in Fayston: Dunbar Hill Road stabilization and stone lining is complete; German Flats Road paving between Fayston Elementary School and Mt. Ellen Road will be done soon (no date announced yet); North Fayston Road will receive new gravel and ongoing projects including roadside mowing, road grading and dust control.
RICHMOND
The bridge replacement project on U.S. 2 in Richmond which has impacted travel on Interstate 89 in Richmond and on U.S. 2 is winding down. Project officials say they do not expect any ongoing cleanup work this week to impact travel on either roadway.
Interstate 89: Montpelier-Waterbury southbound
Work on this major Interstate 89 resurfacing project has commenced. So far, crews have begun removing the travel-lane rumble strip and the white edge line, and they have begun patching potholes in the travel lane.
Beginning Monday, June 23, at 6 a.m. until further notice, motorists should expect major delays during peak travel hours due to the southbound lane closures between Exit 10 Waterbury/Stowe to Exit 8 Montpelier. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the project zone and fines will be doubled.

Project officials in their weekly update shared these details for work this week:
On Monday, June 23 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. expect a travel lane closure from Mile Marker 59.0 to 52.6.
On Monday at 4 p.m. until further notice, the passing lane from Mile Marker 63.5 to 60.5 will be closed to motorists.
Also on Monday, crews will continue with rumble strip removal and shifting the white edge line between Exits 9 and 8. They also will continue to patch travel-lane potholes.
UPDATE on MONDAY, June 23: Due to equipment issues, the passing lane will NOT be closed to traffic this week.
This is a two-year, 10.5-mile resurfacing project that will involve rebuilding both travel lanes. The project is anticipated to last through both this construction season and next summer, with completion targeted by Aug. 15, 2026, according to the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
