Icing on the cake: Harwood Boys Lacrosse clinches D-II title on graduation day

June 21, 2025 | By Waterbury Roundabout

It’s not every day that you win a state championship. And it’s not every day that you graduate from high school. Eleven Harwood seniors did both last weekend.

On Saturday, June 14, Harwood Union Boys Lacrosse brought home the Vermont state Division-II title after a 7-4 rematch win over Hartford at Norwich University, about 8 hours after the morning commencement, where 11 seniors on the team graduated. Waterbury Fire Department was there to escort the team bus through town when they returned with the trophy.

Below are photos and video from Waterbury Roundabout and the opening to Times Argus sportswriter James Biggam’s game story. We hope to click to read the rest on the TimesArgus.com website where you will find photos from the game as well. We also share a piece from the Valley Reporter from earlier this month where the team coaches penned short sketches of the 11 seniors on the roster.

Around 9:30 p.m., a crowd of Harwood parents, friends, and fans grew along Main Street in Waterbury. One fan arrived with a sound system to play Queen’s ‘We Are the Champions’ on blast repeat near the fire station until the bus appeared shortly after 10 p.m. Photos by Gordon Miller

Harwood outlasts Hartford in lacrosse final

June 17, 2025 | By James Biggam | Times Argus Staff Writer

NORTHFIELD — For 11 Harwood seniors, receiving their diplomas in the morning and winning a lacrosse championship at night was all in a day’s work.

The star-studded group of 12th-graders started the weekend with a graduation ceremony and then packed in some family time before capping a marathon Saturday with a 7-4 victory over two-time defending champ Hartford in the Division II title game. The final outcome marked the third title in eight seasons for the Highlander boys, who have made six title appearances during that span.

“We said before the game that this is going to come down to defense,” coach Lamonia said. “And our middie defense was phenomenal with Eli Herrington and Levi Colon. And our senior leadership was awesome with Evan (Andrews) in goal. He is just incredible and he is the heart and soul of our team and came up huge. And Braden Martens played his best game of the season on defense.”…
