A fond farewell at Brookside Primary

Somehow, the first day of school gets all the hype. The anticipation. The excitement. The jitters.

But, there’s something equally if not more thrilling about the last day of school. Everyone is more relaxed and connected, and the giddy anticipation in the air for summertime is palpable.

Photographer Gordon Miller caught dismissal at Brookside Primary School after the final half-day of classes on Wednesday. Students carrying all of their remaining work and belongings headed out to either find their waiting parents in the pickup loop or board the school buses for their last ride home until late August.

The principals, teachers and staff tried to keep things orderly, but the flurry was hard to contain. They shared in the joy of the moment as students paused for hugs and high-fives before running off. And, as always, they lined the driveway to wave goodbye to youngsters clamoring at the bus windows as they rolled by. They also stopped for their own “class photo” with Gordon when it was done.

Happy summer to all … see you on the first day (Aug. 27).
