The incident happened at 5:20 p.m. on the northbound side of the interstate at mile marker 70, according to DMV inspectors Boutin and Weikel, who responded to the crash.

The state’s Motor Vehicle Enforcement and Safety Division investigates crashes involving commercial motor vehicles.

The report issued Tuesday shares details from the incident but did indicate what caused the tractor-trailer to veer off the road, back on, and ultimately crash.

The inspectors’ report explains that the 2020 Volvo Truck Tractor hauling a 2017 utility trailer loaded with recycled paper was headed north when it left the highway and entered the median, crossing into the southbound lane of I-89.

“The commercial vehicle traveled a short distance north in the southbound lane and then crossed over the median again, overturned, and ultimately came to rest across both northbound lanes of travel,” the report states.

The tractor-trailer was owned by 2K Transportation, and the driver was Mohamed Belaroussi, 42, of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The DMV report notes that Belaroussi sustained minor injuries but was not transported for medical treatment.

On Wednesday, Vermont DMV Enforcement & Safety Division Chief of Safety Gene Cote said officials so far do not know what led to the crash. “The investigation is ongoing while the inspector continues to work with the driver and carrier to determine cause,” Cote said.

The crash resulted in the big rig completely blocking the northbound lanes of the interstate. Traffic on the southbound side of the highway also slowed as motorists came upon the scene. I-89 northbound was closed to traffic at Exit 10 in Waterbury until responders were able to clear the highway. The interstate was reopened around 9:30 p.m., according to state police alerts.

In addition to Vermont State Police and DMV personnel, Richmond Fire Department, Richmond Rescue, Bolton Fire Department, and Rick’s Towing responded and assisted at the crash site.
