Road Work: June 2-6
June 3, 2025 | By Lisa Scagliotti
Weekly Road Work reports are assembled with information from the Vermont Agency of Transportation on projects in the region, the Waterbury Public Works Department and highway departments for local projects, and from highway departments in neighboring communities as necessary.
Interstate 89: Montpelier-Waterbury
This two-year 10.5-mile resurfacing project is getting underway soon along I-89 southbound between Waterbury and Montpelier. It will involve rebuilding both lanes, and it is expected to take both this construction season and next summer, with completion anticipated by Aug. 15, 2026, according to the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
This week, motorists can expect southbound lane closures between mile marker 64.2 and 52.6 Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. as workers continue to install signage for the construction zone and survey the project area. They also will begin removal of the rumble strip along the breakdown shoulder and patch potholes within the travel lane.

Work is winding down on the bridge replacement project on U.S. 2 over Interstate 89 in Richmond. The guardrail installation on I-89 has been completed, and VTRans officials say they do not anticipate any impacts to traffic on I-89 this week.
On U.S. 2, workers are completing shoulder restoration on the southwest end of the project near the Richmond Fire Department.
This week, from Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., U.S. 2 will have traffic control present allowing for alternate one-way flow with minimal interruptions. Tasks include installing new guardrail along U.S. Route 2, crack-sealing the new bridge deck, and restoring the staging area on the northwest end of the project.
Weather permitting, final paving on Rt. 2 will begin. Clean up work is ongoing project-wide, according to VTrans.

June 5: This Thursday, June 5, South Main Street will be restricted to alternating one-way traffic for a large ash tree being removed at 123 South Main by Hunger Mountain Children’s Center. Motorists should expect delays while that work is taking place.
Sweet Road: A town road crew is continuing to work on adding gravel to Sweet Road where they left off last year.
June 6: On Friday, June 6, beginning at 4:30 a.m. (weather permitting) crosswalk striping will be done on South Main Street between the intersection with Park Row south to the intersection with River Road at the bridge over the Winooski River. Motorists are asked to use caution navigating workers in the roadway and single-lane traffic in the work areas.
June 10: Starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, work will begin on the sewer bypass for the Stowe Street Bridge/Bridge 36 Project. Traffic on Lincoln Street will be slowed with two lanes open, but narrowed, to allow for the work. Drivers on Lincoln Street on that day can expect the roadway to be shifted to accommodate this activity.
June 17-19: Looking ahead, Kneeland Flats Road is scheduled to be paved Tuesday-Thursday, June 17-19. This work will be weather-dependent and could be rescheduled depending on conditions. In the meantime, motorists—especially those on motorcycles and bicycles—should use caution navigating the rough surface, particularly when it is raining.
