UPDATE 4 p.m., July 6: Vermont State Police have updated their information on this incident, identifying the deceased as Thomas Studley, 74, of Fayston.
A pedestrian was fatally struck in Fayston on Saturday, and a Florida teen driver was scheduled to face a criminal charge in court on Monday, according to Vermont State Police.
The incident happened shortly after 1 p.m. on Mansfield Road in Fayston near the intersection with Stark Mountain Road, police said in a news release on Saturday. The neighborhood is located along Vermont Route 17 near Mad River Glen ski area.
State police responded after getting a call at 1:19 p.m. of a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. The investigation determined that the vehicle was traveling on Mansfield Road towards Route 17 when it left the travel lane and struck a pedestrian who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report by state Trooper Ryan Riegler. Police have not identified the deceased pending notification of family.
The driver involved is 19-year-old Noah Kirson of Winter Park, Florida. Kirson was driving a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser SUV, Riegler said.
Kirson, who was not injured, was not wearing a seat belt; the weather was clear and sunny, and the road was clear at the time of the crash, Riegler’s report notes. The incident is still under investigation, Riegler added.
Kirson was arrested, taken to the Berlin state police barracks, and cited to appear in Washington Superior Court-Criminal Division on Monday to face a charge of Gross Negligent Operation with Death Resulting, police said.
According to police on Saturday, Kirson was to be lodged at Northeast Correctional Complex in St. Johnsbury with bail set at $10,000. On Sunday, state corrections records showed that Kirson had been released at 8:45 p.m. Saturday.
